Are you building a Grocery Service train? Then THIS is the two pack for you! The santa Fe did a tremendous business bringing the bounty of the west to market. This two pack reveals two of the more unusual cars that Santa Fe developed.
The Conditionaire cars came from American car and Foundry, and were designed with cooled chambers in the lining, and were rated a 100 tons load carry capacity, a huge advantage over standard reefers, they were quite economical to load and unload, as no secondary packing was required. Apples, carrots, onions,, and potatoes were transported in this manner. the cars' irregular, orange-colored outer surface (though darker in shade than the standard AT&SF yellow-orange used on reefers) tended to collect dirt easily, and proved difficult to clean as well. Santa Fe eventually relegated the cars to more typical, non-refrigerated applications. |
The Food Service Boxcars were lined cars. They were cleaned regularly, kept in impeccable state of repair, and segregated from regular boxcar service. they carried dry and packaged food items in both direction - from farms of the West, and the Cereal and food mills of the east as a back haul. The Santa Fe had entire unit dedicated to meeting the needs of the food suppliers, and this seemed a logical extension to their mighty reefer service.
The Hopper was created by Micro Trains Line exclusively for this two pack. The boxcar was created by deLuxe innovations for the SoCal N group, intended for a Railroads of Southern California 4 pack that was never released in general circulation. Together, they make a great addition to your Santa Fe, Food service, or other collections!
Your NSC Society is helping to market these trains for Southern California N Scale Council.
